FAQ

WHAT IS A CHURCHKEY?
A churchkey is the opener used to open a flat top beer can. It’s called a churchkey for several reasons. The original openers used on bottles (before beer cans existed) looked similar to a large old fashion keys used by monks to open the church, as well as keep the precious beer they brewed safe. The name was then adopted to all tools used to open beer–with an ironic twist–for it is said if you used a churchkey opener (i.e. if you drank beer) you would be less likely to open the door of a church to attend service.

WHAT IS A FLAT TOP CAN? WHY IS IT SO UNIQUE?
For the first time in nearly 50 years, Churchkey Can Co. is bringing back the flat top steel beer can. Introduced in 1935, the flat top can – which must be opened with a tool called a churchkey – remained a standard until the pull-tab came to market in the mid-1960s. By the mid-1970s, the flat top can was all but a memory. We’re excited to offer this often forgotten beer experience once again.

TELL ME A BIT MORE ABOUT THE CHURCHKEY CAN CO. PILSNER.
Inside each Churchkey can, craft beer lovers will find a delicious Pacific Northwest-brewed Pilsner-style craft beer. The recipe for which was originated by Portland-based home brewers Lucas Jones and Sean Burke – who have been crafting home brewed beer in their garages for many years, and are passionate about their beer and the community they cultivate with it – the Churchkey Pilsner is made using only the highest quality ingredients. The body of the beer comes from the light, grainy pilsner malt taste, accented by a smooth clean bitterness. The Saaz hop taste and aroma featured in the Churchkey Pilsner make for a uniquely complex, yet sessionable beer at 4.9 percent ABV and a 29 IBU.

WHO’S BEHIND CHURCHKEY CAN CO.?
Co-founded by Portland-native Justin Hawkins and actor Adrian Grenier, Churchkey Can Co. began as the desire to someday experience a great beer in a simple can as the generations before had. Quickly realizing the flat top can was all but a memory, Hawkins and Grenier set the wheels in motion to found Churchkey Can Co.
